Simonstown...........3-8

Wolfe Tones...........0-8

Captain Sean Tobin lit the fuse for a first ever Feis Cup with a barrage of early goals to down Wolfe Tones in the final in Pairc Tailteann.

It completes the set of senior competition wins for the club, having won the Division One title which beat Dunboyne in a final in Ratoath in 2005 and back-to-back senior championship successes in 2016 and 2017.

After a disappointing 2021 championship campaign that saw the team lose all three group games, this was a huge lift in performance with Simonstown setting the tone from the start with so much spirited play.

Tobin grabbed a hat-trick with his opportunism around the Tones goalmouth causing them real hurt.

Wolfe Tones had beaten Simonstown by 17 and 10 points in Feis Cup and senior championship group games respectively but the resolve among the Simonstown team to correct that record was evident as they laid down those early markers.

With wind advantage, Tobin stayed close the goal and got a touch on a Shane O'Rourke delivery after three minutes to guide past Cian Farnan for the opening goal to add to his earlier pointed free.

Progress was steady through the first quarter and by the first water break the lead was 1-4 to 0-1 - Tobin getting a glorious point off the outside of his left boot - but it accelerated with the second goal when Farnan spilled and the captain moved quickly to punch again on 19 minutes.

And within three minutes he had struck for a third time, latching on to a break off Conor Sheridan in behind the cover and delicately placing a right-footed shot past Farnan for a 3-4 to 0-1 lead.

From there it was a test in controlling the game and protecting the lead and Simonstown did that admirably with Shane O'Rourke pulling so many strings with his distribution.

Brian McGrath operated in a sweeping role and was outstanding in cutting out attacks while Stephen Moran, behind him, was in commanding form.

Around the middle Neil Kane and Josh Carolan won many breaks and drove forward relentlessly to keep the Tones on the back foot while there were industrious contributions from Ben Hoey and Aaron Chinchilla on the wings.

By the break it was 3-5 to 0-2, Simonstown surviving when a goal chance was presented for Cian O'Neill but he struck a crossbar an the danger was cleared.

Wolfe Tones scored straight from the restart suggesting greater urgency but Simonstown's retention of possession was sharp and patient against the wind and with the Tones making no further headway, Carolan cut in for a 39th minute point to restore a 12-point lead with time running out.

Simonstown had clear goal chances to go further ahead with Sheridan going closest after a Padraig McKeever break.

And by the 53rd minute, when substitute Andrew Kearney and Sean Conlon had pointed in response to Tones scores, they were still 12 points clear as the weather worsened.

By then time had run out for the Tones who, four years earlier, had defeated Simonstown in a Division One league final.

Having suffered three Feis Cup defeats in the past, to Seneschalstown in 1994 and 2007 and Donaghmore-Ashbourne in 2016 when many of the current squad was involved, this was a welcome return for the club.

Some of the players have now been involved in the club's first U-21 and senior championship and Feis Cup successes.

And for Shane O'Rourke there is the personal milestone of now winning all three major senior titles with Simonstown over a career now spanning 17 years with the senior team.

As a 17-year-old, he was a member of the 2005 Division One winning team - managed by Colm O'Rourke also - following it up with those senior championship successes in 2016 and 2017 and now this.
